April 2011- McKinley High School students observed National DNA Day on April 15th, which commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April of 2003 and the first published structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in April of 1953. To celebrate this unique day, Ben Oberkfell, Ambassador from Genome Center, Genome Institute of Washington University gave a presentation on DNA and the Genome Project to 29 high school biology and Advanced Placement biology students.
Mr. Oberkfell discussed the history of the human genome project, how the genome was sequenced, and how it is being used to better our lives. The students also participated in a hands-on activity simulating the DNA duplication process. The activity involved randomly matching up complementary nucleotides to a strand of DNA. The event was well received by the students who were thoroughly engaged throughout the presentation.
