Summer School Begins for St. Louis Public School Students
First
Day of Class off to a Good Start
(St. Louis) – More than 14,000 St. Louis Public Schools’ students
are registered to attend the first day of summer school today.
That’s 3,000 more students registered than originally
expected. This summer, the district is offering summer school
to any Missouri student tuition free.
Elementary will run five days a week from June 11 through
July 20 and High School will run four days per week. All elementary
school hours are from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (with the exception
of Gateway Elementary, which begins at 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
Middle school and high school hours are 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
(with the exception of Long Middle and Compton-Drew, which
start one hour later from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.)
“Our district staff has worked very hard to ensure that
all of our students receive the type of academic curriculum
needed to continue their learning process,” said Superintendent
Dr. Diana Bourisaw. “Our teachers are welcoming students
with open arms and will challenge students to remain academically
engaged this summer,” she added.
This year’s program is designed to accelerate the learning
process in two key areas: Communication Arts and Mathematics. “This
year, students will be given an opportunity for accelerated
learning. There will be small class sizes with a 20:1 class
size ratio, which we believe will offer the opportunity for
all participating students,” said Dr. Bourisaw.
Another new important dimension to the summer program is the
addition of transition programs. The top level grades at each
middle school are moving onto their next school for transition
classes. This experience is designed to assist students with
getting acquainted with their new school and prepare them for
continued success in their new learning environment.
Transportation will be provided for resident students who
live more than one mile from their designated school site.
