RECORD NUMBERS FOR FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL
(August 26, 2005) The St. Louis Public School District has plenty of reason to
boast concerning the first week of school. District officials are reporting 32,847
students attended class this week, that’s an attendance rate of 91%.
“We are pleased with our numbers but it
could be better,” said Superintendent Williams.
“Traditionally our district starts school after Labor
Day, but this year we started two weeks earlier,” said
Williams. “That’s why our Back to School campaign
was so important to ensure that all students of this district
were aware that school started on August 22.”
The district started its Back to School campaign two months
before school started. It consisted of radio and bus advertisements,
superintendent home visits, church visits, and a student and
parent rally. “I am very encouraged by everything I saw
this week,” said School Board President Darnetta Clinkscale. “Not
only did we see improvements in attendance but the buildings
were clean, textbook and supplies were in every classroom I
visited and both teachers and students were enthusiastic.”
This year, Superintendent Williams wants his administration
to focus on five key areas which are: curriculum; building
cleanliness; attendance; transportation; and textbooks. “I
believe that those components are essential for a successful
school year,” said Superintendent Williams.
