DISTRICT PREPARES FOR FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
St. Louis – Interim Superintendent Dr. Diana Bourisaw
today provided an update on the status of preparing for Aug.
28, the first day of school for the 2006-2007 academic year
for the St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS).
• Bus routes and schedules are being finalized this
week. We anticipate bus cards will be mailed out next week.
The district will be using yellow buses for all schools this
year.
• Most of the teachers at the reconstituted schools
have been placed and know the classroom where they will teach
next year. We are placing a priority on finalizing placements
for all teachers and hiring new teachers for any vacant classrooms.
• Principals have been selected for all but one school.
That final position will be filled shortly.
• Our new operations department is working diligently
to ensure all of our facilities are ready for kids on Aug.
28. We are inspecting every school to make sure that all of
the facilities are clean, have the necessary supplies, and
are fully equipped to receive all students assigned to that
school.
• New textbooks have been ordered and will be in the
classrooms on the first day of school.
• We have evaluated the current enrollment projections
for each of our schools to determine interest for specific
programs and made the following changes:
o Jefferson Elementary will be changed from a K-8 school
to a K-6 school due to over-enrollment. Blewett will be receiving
those 7th and 8th graders next school year; and,
o Bryan Hill will be reduced from a K-6 to a K-5 school
due to over-enrollment. Those 6th graders will be attending
Stevens Middle School.
• Professional development for principals has been held.
Professional development for teachers is underway.
