First Day of School for St. Louis Public Schools
Overall successful first day according to Interim
Superintendent
St. Louis – The St. Louis Public School District, the largest
school system in the state of Missouri, today opened its doors
to students for the 2006-2007 academic year. Preliminary numbers
indicate 23,558 students attended today, 72% of the projected
enrollment for the district. These numbers do not include students
in early education classes who will begin next week.
“We worked very hard to remind parents and students that the first
day of school starts on Aug. 28,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Diana
Bourisaw. “All in all, this is a wonderful beginning to the school
year.”
The district has historically had an enrollment approaching 80% by the end
of the first school week. “This is a great start for the first day
of school,” said Dr. Bourisaw.
“I’m thrilled with this first day of school,” said Veronica
O’Brien, President of the Board of Education. “Every school I
visited had students in the classroom, and were fully ready for the school
day,”
she said.
