SLPS Responds to School Lunch Report Card District to review
findings and reexamine meal offerings
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has released
its annual School Lunch Report Card. The committee evaluated
the lunch programs of the nation’s 22 largest school
districts, including the St. Louis Public Schools. The report
criticized the nutritional value of SLPS lunches.
Superintendent Diana Bourisaw said district officials will
take a close look at the methodology and findings of the study.
It’s part of an overall effort to embark on a “fresh
start,” she said.
“Parents have a right to know that the food their children
are eating at school is nutritious and healthy,” Bourisaw
said. “We take the health of our students seriously.
A review of our lunch program would be in the best interest
of our kids.”
Bourisaw said that the district would welcome collaborative
efforts in the area of nutrition.
“In the end,” she said, “it’s about
the well-being and classroom performance of all students.
