Two SLPS Students Are Honored for “Doing the Right Thing”
Melbi Gomez, a student at Bunche International Studies Middle School, and Cierra Hughes, a student at Long Middle School, received “Do the Right Thing” Awards at a ceremony held at the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department in November. Both students were recognized for their positive leadership and service to others. They were selected from hundreds of children who were nominated by area parents, teachers, neighbors and friends.
When he found out about a student who needed help with English, Melbi volunteered to translate. The student was new to Bunche, and Melbi realized the transition was difficult. In order to help the student feel welcome, as well as succeed, he asked to be transferred into the same classes as his friend. Thanks to Melbi, both the student and the teachers at Bunche are able to better communicate with one another.
Cierra is a new student at Long Middle this year, but that did not deter her from becoming the ultimate school citizen. Immediately, she established herself as a positive role model and an active member of the student council. In that role, she leads character education lessons and engages her fellow students in serious conversations about making good choices. Cierra also volunteers each week in the in-school suspension room, where she leads discussions about character education.
Do the Right Thing of Greater St. Louis, Inc. is a program that recognizes and encourages the positive behaviors of area children. KMOV Channel 4, in partnership with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis County Police Department, Suburban Journals and Cooperating School Districts, honors area children who "do the right thing" in monthly awards ceremonies held at Police Department Headquarters. These children are recognized as role models for the youth of the St. Louis region.
