Foundation And Charter Communications Donate $150,000 For
HERZOG’S Musical Equipment
Herzog
Elementary School students were all smiles as they
played their new keyboards in the school’s
SoundTree keyboard lab on Thursday, December 9.
VH1 Save the Music Foundation and Charter Communications
paid for the keyboards, which cost $150,000. The
goal is to have all elementary schools equipped
with special keyboard labs filled with new keyboards.
Herzog’s music teacher Kenneth Roumpos led
his students in a keyboard exercise.
Dr. Pamela Randall Hughes, Deputy Superintendent Acting as Interim Superintendent,
Board President Darnetta Clinkscale, dignitaries from Charter Communications,
and VH1 New York officials were on hand for the special presentation.
Bob Nordman, SLPS music supervisor, believes there is a connection between students
who study music and have good grades. “Considerable research links fine
arts education, particularly in music and theatre, with increased student achievement
in other areas and on standardized test,”
said Nordman. Five SLPS elementary schools were
also grant recipients; they are Baden, Bryan Hill,
Mallinckrodt, Mann and Mason Schools.
“In
combination with the additional VH1-Charter matching
grant of $600,000 plus the locally generated matching
dollars, the total grant will yield $1.5 million
to install keyboard
laboratories in each elementary school,” said Nordman. “ This will
allow each elementary school music teacher to provide instrumental music in a
state-of-the-art manner.”
VH1 Save the Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving
the quality of music education and appreciation in America’s public schools.
