Roosevelt High School Students Collect Money For Tsunami Victims

(February 8, 2005) – Today students at Roosevelt High School are collecting money for Tsunami victims of Somalia. The project is being sponsored by the Roosevelt High School Book Club and the Roosevelt High School Spanish Club. The money will be used to help buy school supplies for an elementary school that was completely destroyed in Hafun, Somalia. Mr. Yusuf Haid, a social studies teacher at Roosevelt, is from Hafun, Somalia and has been in direct contact with government officials. Mr. Haid, will be directing the selection, purchase, and shipment of supplies to Hafun. Furthermore, the project will be documented through cameras that will be included in the shipment.

“Our goal is to raise $2,000 and if we are able to raise that amount of money, we can rebuild the entire elementary school,” said Yusaf Haid.

The death toll from the Asian tsunami disaster has reached 166,000 people. At least 430 people were killed in Somalia and another 2,000 are missing.
