St. Louis Public Schools
announces “reduction in force”
District reorganizes because
of budget reductions - Statement from Superintendent
Diana Bourisaw
Last Friday, the St. Louis Public Schools issued "Reduction
in Force" notices to 34 employees because of declining
revenue. All but 12 of these employees have rights to other
district positions.
The budget approved by the St. Louis Board of Education, which
passed last month, authorized a reduction in up to 60 administrative
positions. We hoped that all reductions would occur through
attrition, especially with the early separation program that
the district has offered. However, this did not happen in all
cases.
Administration worked diligently to identify positions that
could be reduced in a manner that would not affect classroom
instruction.
The position of director of community relations has been eliminated.
Any coaching vacancies will be filled by district teachers.
Affected employees will still have the ability to continue
receiving their current healthcare benefits through July 31.
Employees may then elect to pursue benefits through COBRA.
