St. Louis Public Schools Student Government
Association Visits Jefferson City, Missouri
Superintendent Creg Williams’ vision of introducing
the district’s Student Government Association to leaders
of the state government was realized on Wednesday, March 15.
Superintendent Williams took 17 of his brightest students to
meet with lawmakers at the state capitol. “It’s
important that our students understand how the legislative
process works,” said Superintendent Williams. “That’s
why this trip is so important to all of them. They are the
leaders of tomorrow and the sooner they understand how the
government works, the better it will be for all of us.”
The morning started at district headquarters at 7:00a.m. with
a bus filled with chatter and enthusiasm from students. Lewis
Green, a senior at Beaumont High School, said, “This
is my second time visiting Jefferson City. The first time I
was in elementary school so this time, I am looking forward
to visiting our state capitol because it will teach me how
everything works.”
On their arrival in Jefferson City, students were greeted
by state representatives Connie Johnson, Robin Wright-Jones,
Yaphet El-Amin, Amber Boykins and state senator Maida Coleman. “I
am so pleased that you are here today,” said Representative
Connie Johnson. “This visit sends a message to the entire
state that students in the City of St. Louis are interested
in the lawmaking process, and you want your voices to be heard.”
The group received a special treat while visiting the Missouri
House of Representatives. Speaker of the House, Rod Jetton,
introduced the students and Superintendent Williams during
the morning session.
After the introduction, students toured the capitol building
and enjoyed lunch with Senator Maida Coleman.
