Preparing the Class of 2010
Parents and students pack Vashon for freshman orientation

“Today is about success,” said an impassioned Dr. Creg Williams, superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools. “It’s important to drill that word into the minds of our students.”

With that message, Dr. Williams set the stage for a half-day orientation for incoming ninth-graders. Hundreds of parents and students packed the Vashon High School gymnasium last Saturday to hear spirited remarks from School Board President Veronica O’Brien and student leaders on the importance of helping eighth graders make a smooth transition to high school. All 8th grade students are required to attend the district’s new summer school program, which begins June 5.

The day was filled with breakout sessions and exhibits, which helped to provide a realistic picture of the academic and social challenges facing incoming freshmen. Some 2,700 ninth-graders are expected to enter high school this fall.

Dr. Williams is spearheading an effort to improve student achievement by restructuring the district with freshmen academies, junior high prep schools and creative intervention programs.

“The summer academic program has been completely redesigned to accelerate the learning of those 8th graders who are not proficient in communication arts or mathematics,” said Dr. Williams. “Students who do not require intervention will be enrolled in a summer science camp.”

A pep rally and musical entertainment – showcasing the talents of the Central Visual and Performing Arts Center and Gateway High School - added excitement to the day’s activities. Student leaders also shared their experiences. Jaqui Rogers, senior, Metro High School and Citywide Student Government, shared advice from a candid and inspirational perspective. Joining Jaqui was Louis McGee, senior, Gateway High School and Citywide SGA President. The Vashon Army ROTC started off the morning with the presentation of colors.

Dr. Williams, thrilled to see a packed gymnasium on a Saturday, believes students win when parents and educators work together
