COMPTON-DREW’S PRINCIPAL WINS
AMBASSADORS IN EDUCATION AWARD
SCHOOL WILL RECEIVE GRANT FOR DEVELOPING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
(May 17, 2006)—Andrea Walker, principal at Compton-Drew
Investigative Learning Center, is the recipient of the MetLife
Foundation Ambassadors in Education Award. The award is given
for exemplary leadership demonstrated in school and community
settings. Compton Drew parents and faculty nominated Walker.
MetLife officials will honorher at a brief ceremony at 2 p.m.,
Thursday, May 18 at the school.
Walker was nominated for her efforts in linking community
organizations with Compton-Drew ILC and for continuing to create
a climate of greater community involvement. Among Walker’s
accomplishments include the new student bicycle club and the
creation of a tutoring program, now in its second year. Walker’s
hard work has earned the school a $5,000 grant to be used for
future school and community projects.
“Principals are key to establishing a culture of caring
and community involvement in their schools,”
said Sibyl Jacobson, MetLife Foundation President and CEO. “Her
leadership in reaching out to the neighborhood is an important
example for students and staff.”
