SLPS Will Open Summer School to Nonresident Missouri Students
at No Cost
11,000 city students set to begin the summer session
on June 11
St. Louis – Eleven-thousand students have registered
for summer school offered by St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS),
and enrollment is expected to grow. This year the district
presents an innovative offering for nonresident children. Any
Missouri student may apply to attend summer school tuition-free.
“The summer instructional program for 2007 promises
to be exciting and engaging,” said Superintendent Diana
Bourisaw. “Students will benefit from smaller class
sizes, effective curriculum materials, and more individualized
instruction – all of which contribute to a strong academic
program.”
Summer school in the St. Louis Public School District begins
June 11 and continues through July 20. Enrichment opportunities
are planned at every grade level in an effort to accelerate
students in two key areas – reading and math. For most
resident children, summer school is not mandatory, but all
students are encouraged to enroll. All high schools will be
open, along with 22 elementary and 14 junior/middle school
sites. At the high school level, programs will be operating
for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students lacking credits.
Most middle and high schools will be in session 8 a.m. - 1
p.m. Most elementary schools will operate 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
SLPS officials expect a number of families in surrounding
school districts to register for tuition-free summer school.
Parents of nonresident students will be responsible for their
children’s transportation. Transportation will be provided
for resident students who live more than one mile from their
designated summer school site.
Among the academic highlights:
- “Mad Science,” a K-8 program that builds
student awareness of science-related content and generates
increased student interest in this subject
- “Kindergarten Roundup,” orientation
and enrichment for youngsters who will enter kindergarten this
fall
This year’s program has been structured to:
- meet the goals of No Child Left Behind
- achieve the objectives in the district’s Comprehensive
School Improvement Plan (CSIP)
“Summer school can boost student learning in specific
areas,” Bourisaw said. “Students who experience
success in summer school gain extra confidence that stays with
them for the long term.”
For resident students moving from elementary to middle school – or
from middle school to high school – transition programs
will provide valuable orientation.
Parents wishing to register their children for a summer session
in the St. Louis Public Schools must complete an “Intent
to Participate” form. For SLPS students, the forms are
available at any city school. Parents of nonresident students
must call or write to request the form. The completed documents
must be mailed or hand-delivered to the district’s central
office. The mailing address is:
