SLPS Takes Innovative Pathways in Reducing the Dropout Rate

St. Louis — This year, the St. Louis Public Schools have initiated two innovative programs to increase the graduation rate in the district. The In It 2 Win Dropout Recovery Coalition and ACE Learning Centers offer students nontraditional methods to complete high school, and give students who have previously dropped out of high school a second chance. The popular and well-received curriculums both feature small classes, individualized attention and a focus on developing the students’ workforce skills.

In It 2 Win allows students who have dropped out of school to complete the requirements for a high school diploma in one year. Students, ages 17-21, participate in fifteen hours of weekly academic instruction. Enrollment in other courses – vocational education, elective classes or work study – is required. Once they pass the GED Test, students receive a diploma through the Missouri Option Program. Successful students can proceed to community colleges, four-year colleges or the military. Text books are provided. Classes are held at Turner Middle School, 2615 North Billups Avenue.

The ACE (Achievement, Commitment and Excellence) program allows students, ages 15-21, to recover credits and return to high school, or to graduate with an ACE diploma. Each week, students participate in fifteen hours of computer-centered learning. In addition, students work one-on-one with teachers to insure that short- and long-term goals are reached. When a student achieves 80% or better on a current lesson, he/she advances to the next level.

There are four ACE locations in the district:

• Ashland Elementary School, 3921 North Newstead Avenue
• Blow Middle School, 516 Loughborough Avenue
• Gateway High School, 5101 McCree Avenue
• The Adult Learning Center, 5078 Kensington Avenue
