DANIEL
L. SCHLAFLY PORTRAIT HANGS IN BOARD OF EDUCATION BUILDING
It
is official. The Portrait of Daniel L. Schlafly
is officially hanging in the front lobby of the
St. Louis Board of Education headquarters, located
at 801 North 11th Street. Schlafly was a member
of the St. Louis Board of Education from 1953-1981,
a total of 28 years. He served as president from
1961 to 1963.
Schlafly
was born Sept. 29, 1912 and passed away July 16, 1997. He
was known for his civic and charitable contributions and
was considered a strong advocate for children.
He graduated
from Georgetown University in 1933. He served four years
in the Army during World War II. Other community involvement
included boards of the City/County Board of Freeholders,
the Missouri Botanical Garden and the St. Louis Art Museum.
The building
was named in his honor in 1999.
