ENROLLMENT IN CITY SCHOOLS SOARS DURING FIRST WEEK
Enrollment increases by nearly 6,200 students

St. Louis – The St. Louis Public Schools today reported that enrollment increased dramatically during the first week of the 2006-2007 school year. On Monday the district reported 23,558 students attended the first day of school, approximately 72% of the district’s projected kindergarten through 12th grade enrollment of 32,833. Today, the number of students enrolled totaled 29,714, or 90.5% of the projected enrollment.

“We are very pleased with the increase in enrollment this week and we expect even greater numbers next week after the holiday weekend,” said Dr. Diana Bourisaw, Interim Superintendent. “I have to commend our principals, teachers, and social workers for calling the families of absent students to offer assistance in getting all children back into school,” she said.

The District does expect another boost in attendance next week when early education students return to the classroom.
