FANNING MIDDLE STUDENTS ARE AIMING TO SCORE HIGH ON MAP TEST

Students at Fanning Community Education Center are approaching their MAP testing in a creative way. On Friday, April 8, students and their families will participate in a “Fanning Family MAP Bowl” contest. Participants will ask each other challenging academic questions. The event will be held at the South City YMCA, located at 3150 Sublette. “We’re trying to improve MAP scores and get parents more involved. At the same time, we want families to enjoy a fun night out,” said Terrence Hamilton, community education specialist. MAP testing started March 29 and will end April 29.

GATEWAY STUDENTS FEATURED IN LATEST SBC YELLOW PAGES

Congratulations to students at Gateway Elementary School. Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages featured seven students in the 2005 edition. “This is a great opportunity to showcase our kids,” said principal Gayle Evans. “I am proud that the entire St. Louis metro area will see our students when they browse through the yellow pages.” They are located on page 1292.

METRO HAS SEVERAL NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS

Metro Academic and Classical High School continues its pursuit of academic excellence through several national scholastic award programs. Five seniors have met the requirements to advance to final standing in the National Merit Scholarship Awards competition. They are Alex P. Luft, Lucy E. Patterson, Adam T. Pecher, Rebecca A. Reinhart and Jordan L. Rutledge.

Seniors who are semi-finalists in the National Merit program are Laura Corbin, Thomas J. Epplin-Zapf, Kenneth Hardcastle, Hannah Longworth-Mills and Katherine A. Roulston.

The National Achievement Scholarship program, an organization that awards scholarships to talented African-American students from across the country, selected Metro students Lindsay D. Robinson and Portia R. Wilson.

TWO SLPS STUDENTS ARE “YOUNG HEROES IN MUSIC"

Two students from McKinley Classical Junior Academy will be featured on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. on KFUO-FM live broadcast from the Missouri Botanical Garden. They are: David Ramos, 8th grade- An accomplished violinist and member of the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Jo-el Williams, 7th grade- Plays the flute and a member of McKinley’s Symphonic Wind ensemble and jazz ensemble.

SLPS-TV CHANNEL 20 HOSTS VIDEO FESTIVAL COMPETITION

The St. Louis Public Schools television station Channel 20 will soon host its second annual video festival competition. All students are eligible to enter their video work for the following categories: news, public service announcements, documentary and theatrical. The deadline for all entries is May 13. The video festival premiere will be held Friday, May 27, at 9 a.m., at Carr Lane Visual and Performing Arts Middle School, located at 1004 North Jefferson Ave. For additional information, call Cann at 345-5744.

METRO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT RECEIVES VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD

Rebekah Pierce, a senior at Metro Academic and Classical High School, will receive the
President’s Volunteer Service Award. Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the Prudential Spirit of Community awards program recognizes young people from across the country for their outstanding community service activities.

Rebekah traveled with her church to Mexico City, Mexico and Lima, Peru. “She has an amazing personality, boundless generosity and a determined work ethic,” said Wilfred Moore, principal.

Joshua Haynes, seventh grade student at Carr Lane Visual and Performing Arts Middle School is a big winner! He was one of four grand prize winners for the 2005 NCAA Middle School Madness Art Poster Contest!
Joshua received thirty Hoop City basketball tickets to distribute to his classmates.

Trivia night, a fundraiser benefiting students’ MAP preparation and 8th grade graduation activities, will be held Saturday, April 23 at 6 p.m. at the school, 5130 Oakland Ave.
