Local Bank Takes Special Interest in Sumner High School
Reliance Bank located throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan
area has donated 15 computers, 16 monitors and seven printers
to Sumner High School. Reliance has a special interest in Sumner
because of its unique courses that are being offered at the
historic high school. Principal Randolph Spencer says the computers
will be used in classrooms and administrative offices.
Open House for St. Louis Magnet Schools
The St. Louis Public School District will hold an open house
for its 20 magnet schools on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 11 a.m.
until 3 p.m. Parents who are interested in sending their child
to a magnet school will have an opportunity to talk to administrators,
ask questions regarding the specialty programs, and receive
informational materials and applications. For more information
about the magnet school program, call Recruitment and Counseling
Center at 633-5200.
Wallace Foundation Leadership Conference to be held
in St. Louis
The Wallace Foundation Leadership for Learning Conference
will be held in St. Louis at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel from
Oct. 25 through 28. The conference will feature a wide array
of national leaders in the area of educational curriculum,
leadership and education renewal. The St. Louis Public Schools
will play a significant role in the conference. Superintendent
Diana Bourisaw will make opening remarks on Thursday, Oct.
26, at 9 a.m.
Special Jazz event at Central VPA
Parents, staff and students will enjoy smooth jazz sounds at
Central Visual and Performing Arts on Oct. 16 starting at 7:30
p.m. Some of St. Louis’
finest musicians will be featured including the school’s
jazz show choir, the Bosman Twins, Denise Thimes and others.
The school is located at 3125 South Kingshighway. Central VPA
enjoys a reputation for providing exceptional programs in visual
and performing arts.
SLPS students receive special discount to attend Cirque
du Soleil

Eighth grade student from McKinley attends Wash U
Kaylin Horn, an 8th grade student from McKinley Classical
and Junior Academy, will soon be attending Washington University
for a special class, “Moving and Shaking: An Introduction
to Engineering.”
The class, which runs Oct. 7 until Nov. 11, will be taught
on campus by Washington University faculty. Kaylin was selected
to receive a scholarship to attend this program from the Gifted
Resource Council after she submitted an essay about her interest
in engineering. She is one of two students who received this
scholarship for 6-8 grade girls.
