SLPS Parents As Teachers
St. Louis Public Schools’ Parents as Teachers program
will host an informational event about its services on Saturday,
Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Gateway Middle School.
The event will provide parents with information on child development,
prenatal to age five, and will allow parents to meet with local
agencies and businesses for support. Gateway Middle School
is located at 1200 N. Jefferson.
Local Businessman Contributes $25,000 to Benefit
Soldan Students
Local businessman and 1956 Soldan High School graduate Charles
P. Gallagher will be honored in a “surprise” ceremony
for his generosity to Soldan International Studies students.
The ceremony will take place at Soldan, 918 N. Union, on Saturday,
Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. Gallagher made it possible for a former
student to compete at the National Forensic League competition
in Philadelphia. He also donated three new copiers to the school.
Mr. Gallagher, President and Chairman of the Board of United
Fruit and Produce Company, will be at the school to present
a $25,000 check to be used over a period of five years for
students who have a 3.2 or higher grade point average, college
acceptance letter, and meet other requirements.
SLPS /United Way Campaign
St. Louis Public Schools employees are once again participating
in the United Way 2006 campaign. This year the United Way of
Greater St. Louis is hoping to raise more than $66 million
to support 200 vital health and human services organizations
in the bi-state region. SLPS representatives and district administrators
participated in a kick-off event held at Carr Lane Visual and
Performing Arts Middle School on Friday, Oct. 20.
Former Humboldt Student Travels Back
Home
A former Humboldt Middle School student is making it big in
the rap industry. Javon Campbell, aka
“Jibbs,” brought his smooth lyrics to Humboldt
and Yeatman-Liddell middle schools on Thursday, Oct. 19. His
hit song “Chain Hang Low” is currently receiving
heavy airplay nationwide. “Jibbs”started his music
path at the age of 9 and has been the opening act for such
stars as Bow Wow and Chris Brown.
Gear-Up
St. Louis Gear-Up and the Urban League of Metropolitan St.
Louis will be holding a special “Meet
& Greet” event for Gear-Up program parents and guardians
on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 3:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the
Urban League’s Vaughn Cultural Center, 3701 Grandel Square.
Parents will have the opportunity to get information about
Gear-Up parent involvement and volunteer opportunities, meet
the Gear-Up team, and find out how they can become a Gear-Up
Parent Leader. For more information and to RSVP, please contact

child’s school.
SLPS Art Supervisor Receives National Award
Congratulations to Art Supervisor Linda Kraiberg for receiving
the 2006 Raymond L. Breun Excellence in Education award. The
annual award recognizes individuals who participate in Museum
Education Programs and resources at the Gateway Arch and Old
Courthouse. Kraiberg received the award for her assistance
with the 2005 Children’s Art Contest, The Gateway Arch:
A Child’s Perspective.
