National Family Literacy Celebration
Stix Early Childhood Center is hosting a National Family Literacy
Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00
p.m. Bring your family to story time with Clifford and his
friend. There will also be a special opening event at 10:00
a.m. Experience family literacy at work in a festive carnival-like
atmosphere complete with door prizes. For more information,

SLPS Students Participate in Nov. 7 Election
St. Louis Public Schools students will exercise their right
to vote in a mock election on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Students will
be casting their ballots for candidates in key state and local
races as well as several ballot issues. The election is part
of Kids Voting USA a nationwide, nonpartisan program where
students in grades K-12 are taught the importance of citizenship
and voting. Each school will have at least two students that
will be junior poll workers. Volunteers from several organizations,
including Americorp, the Young Lawyers Association, and law
students from St. Louis University will also be assisting in
the election process. Voting results will be available on the
Kids Voting website, www.kidsvotingmissouri.org, beginning
late in the evening on Nov. 7. Complete results will be posted
the day after election.
Transition for Life Fair
The St. Louis Public Schools’ Division of Special Education
will host an event for selected 11th grade students and their
parents on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
at the Clyde C. Miller Career Academy. The theme for the event
is “Transition for Life.” Community agencies have
been invited to share information about programs and services
that are available to individuals with disabilities. The agencies
are involved in assisting students in making a successful transition
from school to post secondary activities which include employment,
education, independent living, and community participation.
Following the workshop activities, there will be a brief program
to recognize the agencies for their support to students in
the District. Students and parents will be recognized for their
participation in the fair.
Gateway Elementary Celebrates Veterans Day
Gateway Elementary School, #4 Gateway Drive in St. Louis,
will present its Fifth Annual Veterans Day Program on Thursday,
Nov. 9 at 10:00 a.m. in the school gymnasium. This year’s
event will feature a concert by the all of the students in
the first, second and third grades under the direction of Ms.
Rebecca Mestemacher, music specialist, as well as performances
by the Gateway Cheerleaders and other selected students. Cadets
from Cleveland Junior Naval Academy will provide the opening
color guard. The staff of Gateway Elementary School would like
to extend a special invitation to veterans and their families.

Shepard School Celebrates 100 years
Shepard School is celebrating 100 years of “glorious” education.
Join all years of classmates from Shepard School for food,
dancing, and a great time on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 from 3:00
p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The event will be held in the Shepard
Accelerated eMints Academy Gymnasium, 3450 Wisconsin Ave. To

SLPS Celebrates Community Education Week
All St. Louis Public Schools’ Community Education Centers
will celebrate Community Education Week from November 12 through
17. The week-long celebration will begin with a Showcase Celebration
featuring performing artists, St. Louis leaders and supporters,
a commemorative ad book, and the announcement of City-Wide
Student Ambassadors. The kickoff event will be held on Sunday,
Nov. 12 beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Mullanphy School, 4221 Shaw
Blvd.
Gang Violence Task Force
A Gang Violence Town Hall meeting will be held on Saturday,
Nov. 11, from 10:00 a.m. until noon at Waldbridge Elementary,
5000 Davidson Ave. Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, St. Louis
Police Department’s Gang Unit, and Circuit Judge Angela
Turner Quigless are guest speakers.
Free Family Fairy Tale Festival
A new, interactive exhibit, “Once Upon a Time… Exploring
the World of Fairy Tales,” will be on display at the
main branch of the St. Louis Public Library this weekend on
Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9: 00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m., and Sunday,
Nov. 5 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Storytellers, puppeteers,
musicians, dancers, jugglers and crafts will be available for
families along with the exhibit. The exhibit will be on display
through December 30.
