St. Louis Scores Sponsors City-Wide Poetry Slam Fest

St. Louis Public Schools students representing five schools will demonstrate their talents through the spoken word in the St. Louis Scores Poetry Slam Fest. Approximately 150 elementary students representing Bryan Hill, Clark, Lexington, Nance and Sherman, will recite their poetry from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, at Vashon High School, located at 3035 Cass Ave. St. Louis Scores, a not-for-profit affiliate with America Scores, is an after-school program that seeks to develop the literary and communication and athletic skills of students.

Roosevelt H.S. Partners with Gateway Greens in “Get the Lead Out”Project

A special meeting focused on lead prevention and education entitled “Get the Lead Out” will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Roosevelt High School. Roosevelt is partnering with Gateway Greens to educate parents and community members about the dangers of lead poisoning and how it affects children’s physical and mental development. Guest speakers will include Donna Jones, St. Louis Board of Education, State Representative Robin Wright Jones and James Shrewsbury, President of the Board of Aldermen.

Author Sharon Draper to visit McKinley Classical Junior Academy

Author Sharon Draper will visit McKinley Classical Junior Academy on Tuesday,

Nov. 14. Draper is the author of “We Beat the Street,” “Forged by Fire,” “Tears of a Tiger,” “Double Dutch,” “Darkness Before Dawn,” and “Romiette and Julio.” She will be presenting her book, “We Beat the Streets,” to McKinley students and faculty.

McKinley CJA was selected as the host school for Draper’s special presentation.

Pop Star will appear at Bunche International Studies

Britney Christian, a rising star in the pop/rock music world will bring a special treat to students at Bunche International Studies Middle School on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. The Milk Rocks Assembly is a national touring program for schools that encourages teens to make healthier food choices and become more physically active. The campaign also promotes the benefits of drinking milk and good nutrition. Christian, a 16 year old from southern California, is the official spokesperson for Milk Rocks.

Soldan’s Choir Will Hit Big Screen

Soldan International Studies High School Choir, under the direction of Kemara Skinner, was selected to sing on the soundtrack for Robert De Niro’s film, “The Good Shepard.” This is a remarkable accomplishment, because the competition was steep. High schools from across the country auditioned for the chance to sing on the soundtrack.
