News you need to know

By adding dynamic new programs, initiatives, and opportunities for the 2007-08 school year, the St. Louis Public Schools have “raised the bar” to create the BEST choice in urban education. Please take the time to investigate the exciting advances that the district has to offer:

McKinley 9th Grade Leadership Academy, 2156 Russell Blvd. We have expanded our successful gifted education program to include a full-time gifted high school. Contact: Brenda Smith, Principal, (314) 773-0027, Brenda.Smith@slps.org.

The Downtown Academy, 1220 N. 10th Street (Patrick Henry School). The facility offers eMINTS, a Virtual Learning Center, and an Early Childhood and Lab School. Contact: Esperansa Veal, Principal, (314) 231-7284 or (314) 608-0232, Esperansa.Veal@slps.org.

Virtual Learning. The e-Learning initiative begins this fall for students in grades K-3 and 9-12. The district has partnered with two world-class organizations, K12 Inc. and Kaplan Virtual Education. Enrollment begins August 20 on a first-come, first-served basis. Online courses begin September 4. Contact: Jo Ann Reese, Director, (314) 345-2551, jreese@slps.org.

Magnet Schools. The St. Louis Public Schools offer a kaleidoscope of tuition-free programs for St. Louis City and eligible County residents. Elementary and high-school programs are available in the visual and performing arts, gifted education, international studies, math/science/technology, military, and more. Student Placement and Registration. Contact: Louis Kruger, Executive Director of Business Operations, (314) 633-5201, Louis.Kruger@slps.org.

Mandatory Attendance Age. Effective July 1, 2007, the State of Missouri raised the mandatory attendance age to 17 for students attending St. Louis Public Schools. SLPS is the only district in the state with a raised mandatory attendance age. Students through the age of 17 must attend school.
