In It 2 Win
The newly formed In It 2 Win Coalition held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Turner Middle School on Monday, October 1, to launch its plan to reclaim as many as 2,000 dropouts from the St. Louis Public Schools. The grassroots partnership is organized by State Representative Jamilah Nasheed, a dropout who earned her high school equivalency certificate and now serves St. Louis' 60th legislative district. The coalition’s mission is to have religious, political, and community-based leaders join forces and resources to reach high school dropouts between the ages of 17 and 21. Their plan is to reach these dropouts through an organized campaign that involves a phone bank, door-to-door canvassing, and motivational interviewing. Interested individuals should contact Ann Hamilton-Union at 314-345-4691.

October Safety Tip
Tips for Parents and Teachers for Children and Students: Halloween Safety

Have a fun and safe Halloween! Follow these safety tips:

• Parents should allow children to have some treats at home before they leave to trick-or-treat.

• Wear light-colored clothing or reflective tape so you can easily be seen.

• Make sure your costume fits well. Wear face make-up instead of a mask.

• Trick-or-treat with friends. It is more fun and safer too!

• Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

• Trick-or-treat during daylight hours. Carry a flashlight in case it gets dark.

• Look both ways before crossing the street and always use crosswalks.

• Trick-or-treat in familiar neighborhoods.

• Visit homes with the porch lights on which welcome you.

• When Trick-or-treating with friends, tell mom and dad your route.

• Bring your treats home and do not eat anything until your parents have checked it.

• If any treats look suspicious, have your parents call the police.

The October Safety Tip was provided by Col. Eugene Reece, Sr., Executive Director of Safety and Security.

Ultimately, it is through serving others that we become fully human.
