Dr. Samantha Smith

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be an educator. Starting in third grade at Bryant Elementary in Kansas City, MO, I began this journey, peer tutoring every year, entering Mizzou's College of Education program in 2001, and joining Teach for America and moving to St. Louis to teach English at Vashon High School in 2005.

After graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a B.S. in Secondary Education, I was eager to transform young minds and inspire a love of reading! I dove right into my first teaching position and spent four years teaching English and AVID at Vashon High School and Williams 9th Grade Academy. During this time, I completed my Master’s in Educational Leadership at Maryville University. Upon completion of that degree in 2009, I transitioned out of the classroom to an Instructional Coaching role at Clyde C. Miller Career Academy. During my instructional coaching years, I wanted to stay connected to students, so I opted to expand my coaching work beyond the classroom to the intense world of policy debate! From 2007 to 2016, I coached in the St. Louis Urban Debate League, sending four teams to Nationals and earning Championship Coach honors two years in a row. I also wanted to explore literacy across all of the content areas I was coaching, so I completed my K-12 Special Reading Certification at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2013.

My five years at Miller taught me the inner-workings of high-stakes testing career and technical education, which provided great training for my transition to Gateway STEM in 2014. Over the past three years, I have completed my Doctorate in Education Leadership at Maryville University and expanded my work in the St. Louis community. In addition to my work at Gateway STEM, I serve on numerous curricular, literacy, and talent retention committees throughout St. Louis, including four years of AdvancED External Review Teams. As an alumna of Teach for America, I sit on the Alumni Advisory Board as well as the Collective Steering Committee.

I am looking forward to my fourteenth year working with students and teachers in St. Louis City. Gateway STEM is an exciting place to work, as I am a passionate advocate for culturally responsive and STEM education. I look forward to continuing to serve our diverse and dynamic learning community!
