I am Dr. Wanda Davis, a Career and Technical Educator at Carnahan High School.  I am highly qualified and certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) and Project Lead The Way (PLTW) AP Computer Science Principles educator. I earned my MOS Certification in May 2019 and PLTW AP Computer Science Certification in July of 2019.  I have been teaching programming, web design, game design, film making and editing, and photography over the last 20 years in urban high schools in Missouri.

My teaching philosophy is very simple students do not care how much you know, until they know how much you care. Teaching at a Title 1 high school where the poverty rate is 96% of students on free and reduced lunch, caring is what they need first, after they know I care then they open up their heart and mind and I can teach them. I show my caring by forming relationships with my students and trying to help them find their dreams and strengths so they can believe in themselves the way I believe in them. Either way they are the future and have unlimited value.

The MOS Certification and PLTW AP Computer Science Principles programs offers students the foundational concepts of the Microsoft Office and computer science principles suites.  This  challenges students to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. More than a traditional introduction to the Microsoft Office and computer science, both programs are rigorous, interactive courses that explores many of the foundational ideas of computing to ensure that all students understand how these concepts are transforming their world they live in.

In addition, students are offered the following skill concepts throughout the school year:

  1. Math concepts such as variables and conditions
  2. Logic such as sequencing as well as cause and effect
  3. Techniques for solving problems
  4. Project design such as the importance of breaking down big ideas to specific tasks
  5. Benefits of collaboration and techniques for communicating ideas
  6. Ability to take criticism as well as identify and fix errors
  7. Perseverance in the face of difficult

My future plans for Carnahan MOS and AP Computer Science Principles students is for them to become certified in Microsoft Office and various programming applications.  Reasons why students should become certified: They stand out from the COMPETITION for jobs and scholarships; Earn CONFIDENCE in their abilities! Prove to themself that they can do it; Demonstrate their expertise in the LATEST TECHNOLOGY; Work FASTER because they know the software well; Industry-leading software brands are EASILY RECOGNIZED on their resume; Join an elite team of PROFESSIOONALS; Industry certification gives EXTERNAL VALIDATION to what they learned in school; Get a job anywhere in the WORLD; Use their certification in many different CAREER FIELDS; It is easy to PREPARE with the full pathway plan.  I can be reached via the district email at wanda.davis@slps.org.

I strive for excellence. It will take everyone partnering with parents and the community to ensure that our students and teachers find success in this virtual way of teaching and learning.
