A little bit about Mrs. Miller:
I LOVE TO TEACH: I have over 8 years of varied teaching experience. This will be my 7th year in a row teaching first grade! I am a born and raised St. Louisan and I love our city! I attended public school growing up and graduated from University of Missouri St. Louis with my Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education. I am certified to teach grade levels 1-6. I also have Special Education Certification, which I obtained after I graduated. I have previously taught at Premier Charter School and Immacolata Catholic School in both the general and special education settings.
I LOVE FAMILY: Mr. Miller and I have two kids, Jack, who is a 4th grader and Eva, who will be in Pre-K soon. We love taking trips on Spring Break and during the Summer! Our favorite place to go together is Disney World! We currently have no family pets, but we continue to try to convince Mr. Miller that we will have one in the next two years :)
Learning Reading and Math in Mrs. Miller's Classroom
Daily Instruction for ELA: After teaching first grade for just a decade (including this year), I have found that my preferred method of practice in the classroom is Daily 5. This is a highly structured literacy rotation we spend time doing every day, except Friday's. This gives me the opportunity to work in the small group setting, which I have found to be highly successful when children are learning to read.
Math: We continuously use hands on learning tools learn how to solve math concepts and problem solving in various ways. As this common core approach can seem frustrating to your child at first, it will serve as a tool that will stay with them as they begin learning more complex algebraic concepts later in their educational careers.
Until recently, we have used a paper daily behavior chart in my classroom. We made the recent transition to Class Dojo in an attempt to be more economical.
