    Teacher Message:
    Dear Families and students,
WELCOME to Room 103 at Gateway Michael, a virtual reality!  I pray daily for your protection from this virus and economic instability.  May you receive all the assistance you need to keep your family safe and healthy.
This "old school" teacher, who follows a "Constructionist" theory of education (using the stuff of the real world to touch, feel, see, hear, smell and taste (when possible), is being challenged to go "Techy."  I will do my best to serve you and your child in this endeavor.
Since I am learning how to do this, please expect changes to happen, sometimes daily.  I will do my best to offer step-by-step help, but at times I may need to scratch all and start over.
Technology is a wonderful tool when used in moderation:  it promotes growth in visual-spacial growth, multi-tasking and learning.  However, it is very important that your child not spend more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time using technology (computer, iPad/tablet, smart phone, TV, etc.).  Face time with these devices has been shown to "rewire" the brain causing:  reduction of attention span, self-soothing and self-regulation; increase in aggression, stagnation of physical activity, reduces school performance, and limits interpersonal interactions.   Two important things you can do is to limit technology use to a total of 1-2 hours per day and to keep all technology out of your child's room.  (See articles below for further discussion.)

Ms. Rosemarie.Schelling, B.S., M.A.T.

I have worked at Gateway Michael for almost 26.5 years.  I started at the old "Elias Michael School" and worked there for 1.5 years as the Home Economics teacher half time and at Gauladet School the other half.  In 1995 Elias Michael split into two schools, Pre K through 8th grade housed at the present site of Gateway Michael School, and High School site on McCree.  I continued teaching at all three schools as the Home Economics/Family Consumer Science teacher until 2001.  After obtaining my certification in Cross Category Special Education in 2001, I began teaching in a classroom at Gateway Michael full time.  I have been blessed with so many beautiful memories of my students and their families these past 26 years.
