A Message from Mr. Griswold
The purpose of music education is to enable each student to appreciate, create, and perform music from a wide variety of cultures and historical periods. This engagement with the art of music will "awaken the artist" within each student, encouraging them to create, respond, and connect using this universal language. Every student has musical ability - and band is a great place to discover it!
Mr. Griswold grew up in Saint Louis, where he was active in choir, band, and jazz band at Principia High School. One favorite High School memory is marching on stage at the Muny with 54 other high school trombone players in a production of "The Music Man." He has been active professionally playing in groups including Genesis Big Band, The Original Knights of Swing, Washington University Wind Ensemble, Webster University Orchestra, and Town and Country Orchestra. He is also an active songwriter, with two CDs to his credit. In addition, he is the music director for his church. Mike has twenty-two years of working with band students in grades 4 - 12 and was the recipient of the 2008 Music Merit Award from the Saint Louis Metro 8 District of the Missouri Music Educator's Association. He also had a career as an environmental educator, working at Nature Centers and parks. In his free time, he writes songs, enjoys camping and nature study, and hangs out with his family.
