    Teacher Message: Students will have the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. Once they have gained proficiency on their instrument, they will have the chance to be a member of our performing ensembles. Students will also learn about performance techniques, teamwork involved in ensembles, historical and cultural context of different musical styles, and basic elements of music theory.
     
     
    Biography: Mr. Gerdes studied music at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Masters of Music in Theory and Composition. He completed his certification in Music Education at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. Mr. Gerdes has professional experience in a wide variety of musical ensembles and styles including wind band, marching band, jazz, rock and roll, opera, and musical theater. His original compositions and arrangements have been played by various groups in the St. Louis and Carbondale areas. Mr. Gerdes taught music methods classes at Fontbonne University from 2000-2004. He has been adjunct faculty at Maryville University from 2004 to the present. There he teaches History of Jazz and Arranging and Composition. He is also the composer-in-residence for New Line Theatre.
