My name is Ms. Suzanne Murphy and I want to take a moment to welcome you back to school for the 2021-2022 school year! Although it is not the typical start to school due to COVID and the necessary changes, we are excited to get going! I want to assure you that we have taken precautionary measures in all aspects to create a safe learning environment for your children.

As the Family Community Specialist, my duties consist of, but not limited to actively engaging parents and the community in developing effective relationships and partnerships.  In addition, ensuring student achievement and school improvement; helping families establish a home environment to support children as students; identify and integrate community resources to strengthen school programs, family practices, and student development; involve parents as leaders and representatives in the school’s decision-making processes; recruit and organize parental involvement and support; collaborate and communicate between parents, schools, and the community to promote parental participation in student achievement and school activities.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to volunteer and participate in school activities such as, PTO, schoolyard monitor, breakfast or lunch monitor, classroom assistance, or assisting on a field trip.  This year we are hoping to make it easier for parents to volunteer and get involved.  ALL PARENTS OR GUARDIANS MUST COMPLETE AND RETURN A VOLUNTEER APPLICATION AND BE APPROVED BY THE OFFICE OF VOLUNTEER SERVICES BEFORE YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ASSIST.  The approval process takes approximately 2-3 weeks for completion and upon approval and is effective for 2 years.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to have parents, community partners, or volunteers in the school building. We do not enjoy having to place these restrictions and requirements on our families, community partners, or volunteers.  However, to mitigate the spread of COVID and provide the safest environment possible, these measures need to be implemented and practiced.

If you have any questions or concerns, or you can reach me at (314) 361-0432.  I look forward to working with you this school year.

    Sincerely,

Ms. Suzanne Murphy/Family and Community Specialist/Washington Montessori
