Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Kathryn (Kate) Berger
This year I’m teaching three classes that I haven’t taught before: World Literature, or English 10; ESOL Level 4; and a new class, English Academic Language Support. I am deeply committed to the themes of the World Literature class—nature, environmentalism, and social justice—and am looking forward to finding ways to engage my students in these critical topics.
I believe this is my fifteenth year teaching—I’ve also taught an advanced writing class for second-language learners at St. Louis Community College for many years, and I previously worked at an academically rigorous private high school in the county. I earned my bachelor’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin (majoring in History, while receiving honorary recognition from the English Department). I also hold a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. I work part-time in landscaping. In addition to a deep and abiding love for literature and language, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and spending time outdoors, preferably along one of the spring-fed rivers in the Missouri Ozarks.
