Mrs. Ashley McMichael
Growing up, I was always passionate about two things: sports and science. After playing almost every sport throughout high school, I received a basketball scholarship to Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. This is where my love for sports helped me receive an education in science. While in college, I studied Biology and Chemistry originally planning on a career in medicine. The summer of my junior year however, I worked as a field research assistant in Madagascar and on this trip, began thinking about entering the field of education.
While I was in Madagascar to conduct research on the fossa, the main predator of lemurs, I also had the opportunity to do some community outreach. Part of our research efforts included educating the local community about the endangerment of the fossa and why it is important they help protect this animal. I enjoyed my time teaching the kids during these sessions and felt passionate about passing on my love of science.
After college, I joined Teach for America and moved to St. Louis. I taught Physical Science at Vashon High School for two years while earning a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. I then transferred to Gateway where I taught Chemistry, coached Girls Basketball and Track, and served as the Assistant Athletic Director. During this time I also completed a Master’s in Education Administration and an Education Specialist Degree from UMSL.
Last year, I transitioned into an Academic Instructional Coach role at Gateway where I primarily worked to support math, science, and STEM-related CTE teachers. Outside of Gateway, I also serve as an executive director and STEM Coordinator of the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show and STEM Expo, a director for the 60 Plaza Square Community Improvement District, and the Teach for America Alumni Advisory Board.
I am very excited to be returning to Gateway STEM as an Assistant Principal and looking forward to another great school year! Go Jags!
