Mr. Jake Norman
I’m Señor Norman and I teach Spanish at Mallinckrodt Academy. The 2018-2019 school year is my sixth at Mallinckrodt! In my eight years of teaching, I’ve taught all levels from Pre-K-12th grade. When I returned to St. Louis from teaching high school in Phoenix, AZ, I went back to teaching elementary school and am thankful for that decision every day. When I teach, my primary goal is to comfortably challenge our new, young language learners. I make sure to:
- Offer lots of target language input
- 90% Spanish
- 10% English
- Lower affective filter
- Turn off internal monitor
- ENCOURAGE SOCIAL AND ACADEMIC RISK TAKING
- Treat students with dignity and respect
- Don’t directly correct mistakes
- Emphasize compassion
In addition, 2018-2019 marks the first year that we have a Spanish classroom at Mallinckrodt. The new space has given me new opportunities to incorporate different activities, display more cultural artifacts, and streamline the daily routine for all classes. Thank you so much to the MAGI PTO for their support!
In my free time, I enjoy Iowa Hawkeyes football, travelling, cooking, spending time with my three daughters, Miriam (7), Eliana (5), and Ruth (2), and all kinds of outdoor activities, like camping, backpacking, and canoeing.
If you have any questions about Spanish at Mallinckrodt, please feel free to email me directly.
