Degrees and Certifications:
Welcome to Mann, Kindergarten and Second Grade English Language Learners,
My name is Svetla Mechkova and I will be supporting you on your way to becoming proficient in English. Soon you will listen, speak, read, and write English as if you had been doing it your whole life! Speaking from my own experience, as English is my second language, I can assure you that the more English you hear, the more English you will understand. It will not happen at once, but it will happen faster than you expect.
Prior to coming to Mann Elementary, I taught all levels of the Russian language at Soldan International Studies High School. I am proud to share with you that each year for five years in a row, a Soldan student was selected as one of the American Teachers of Russian Scholar Laureates. Each student received a certificate of recognition signed by the president of the American Council of Teachers of Russian and was recognized in a special section of the ACTR newsletter. Those students have become members of a highly select group of the most outstanding secondary students in the United States who study Russian.
In addition, I was an adjunct UMSL instructor and led the Russian Language Advance Credit Program at Soldan International Studies High School. I was also the World Languages Department chair there.
Personally, I was born in Bulgaria, Southeast Europe. There, I earned my degree in Bulgarian and Russian language and literature. I moved to the United States in 1995 and began studying the English language. Then, I enrolled and completed an Associate Degree in Accounting. However, since my passion is teaching, I decided to work towards earning my teaching certifications and a master’s degree in education. Now I hold four certifications, including one in ESOL, and added a master’s degree in education to my credentials.
