SLPS Launches Early College Academy
During the upcoming 2016-2017 Academic Year, Saint Louis Public Schools will launch its Early College Academy (ECA) in partnership with St. Louis Community College- Forest Park. The program is led by Dr. Dan Edwards, Director of To and Through College Initiatives for SLPS.
The Early College Academy is an academic opportunity for high-performing students to socialize and study in a rigorous learning community of peers. SLPS students will be able to apply during their sophomore year. If accepted into the Early College Academy, students will spend their junior and senior year on the St. Louis Community College-Forest Park campus.
Through the ECA, SLPS high school students will earn high school credits while also earning college credits as they attend classes, full-time, on a college campus. Upon completion of the two year program, students will have earned an Associate of Art degree as well as a high school diploma.
While attending class on the Forest Park campus, students will have access to a full-time high school counselor and college adviser, who’s an SLPS staff member specifically there to support and assist ECA attendees. Students will also have access to the Forest Park Student Resource Center, Library and computer labs as well as be eligible for membership in student clubs and campus activities.
Students attending the ECA will still be able to return to their home high school for extracurricular activities including Student Council, dramatic performances, debate and social events such as prom and homecoming.
Saint Louis Public Schools will cover the cost of tuition, books and fees for all students in the SLPS Early College Academy. For its inaugural year, there are 30 students that have enrolled and begin classes this fall.
