This upcoming fall, Saint Louis Public Schools students and Carr Square community will have the opportunity to enjoy a new ¾ mile walking trail that will be accessible off of the 1200 block of North Jefferson Avenue. Funded by Missouri Foundation for Health, the Carr Square Walking Trail is a part of the Healthy Schools Healthy Communities initiative, which works toward improving the built environment while providing opportunities for kids and families to be active where they live, learn and play. This is the fifth year that Saint Louis Public Schools and BJC School Outreach and Youth Development have collaborated together on this initiative.
The project is a result of the voices from both residents and school officials. “As you can imagine, building a community walking trail requires the support of key stakeholders and investment of time through collaboration. Civil Design, Inc. has been willing to spend time and energy to survey the land and develop designs so the Healthy Schools Healthy Communities team could effectively present the plans in the community” said Erica Oliver, Community Health Partner with BJC School Outreach and Youth Development.
The trail will be constructed using concrete and will be ADA compliant. The goal is to provide an environment that encourages enjoyable physical activity and the development of healthy habits.
