Dr. Azalia Carter

Hello Soldan families!

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! I hope this letter finds you well and that you had a restful and enjoyable summer. As we embark on the new academic year, I am filled with excitement and anticipation for the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead for our students, staff, and community. At Soldan ISHS, we are committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where every student can thrive. Over the summer, many improvements were made around our building. We received 500 new student desks, over 1500 new books in our school library, libraries in the English Language Arts classrooms, whiteboards in every classroom, and a state-of-the-art kitchen where student meals can be prepared onsite.

Our dedicated team of educators are working diligently to prepare engaging and challenging learning experiences that will inspire our students to reach their full potential. With the St. Louis Public Schools’ Portrait of a Graduate driving the work we do, we are excited to introduce several new courses, initiatives, and partnerships this year aimed at enhancing the educational experience for all our students to foster a love of learning. We believe these additions will further support our purpose to equitably educate and support our scholars academically, socially, and emotionally so that they can grow and succeed in their personal and professional endeavors and positively contribute to an ever-evolving global society.

The additions include:

  • Den Time to help students develop into well-rounded, confident, and capable individuals. Student groups will meet with a staff mentor to ROAR into social and emotional learning Show Responsibility, take Ownership of their actions, Achieve their goals, and develop Respect & Acceptance for others.

  • Four World Languages – Arabic, Chinese, French, and Spanish (Soldan ISHS students in the class of 2027 and beyond are required to take two years of the same World Language as a part of their graduation requirements.)

  • Expanded course offerings – African American History, College & Career Readiness, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Photography, Social/Digital Media, Sports Marketing, Street Law, Weight Training, and more.

  • Immersive and interactive learning experiences in science classes through the use of zSpace’s augmented and virtual reality technology.

  • Partnerships with Craft Alliance and the St. Louis Chess Club.

We will continue to be a cell phone-free campus and a dress code enforced to maximize instructional time and minimize distractions from learning. The full Student & Family Handbook posted on the website. I have highlighted some of the updated policies.
