    OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL

    July 23, 2018

Dear Gateway Elementary Parents and Guardians:

The beginning of the school year is just around the corner.  I hope that everyone is having a fun-filled summer.  We look forward to working with you as partners in education.  We need your assistance and support in building and maintaining an educational environment that is conducive to high levels of student achievement and growth.  The first step is making sure that your child is at school daily.  When your child is tardy, late or absent from school, he/she is missing crucial instructional time and this affects the learning process

For your convenience, Early Registration starts Monday, July 30, 2018 from 9:00 a. m. until 3:00 p. m., for new and returning students.  The first day of school is Tuesday, August 14, 2018.  School is in session from 8:05 a. m. until 3:02 p. m.   Staff supervision of students begins at 7:30 a. mPlease do not leave your child outside the school unattended.  For safety concerns, it is important that students are not dropped off prior to 7:30 a. m.  The school doors will not open until 7:30 a. m.  Teaching staff will be on duty at 7:55 a. m., in the gymnasium for the Morning Forum.  All students will receive free breakfast and lunch. Breakfast begins at 7:30 a. m., and ends at 8:05 a. m. Parents must remain with students eating breakfast after 8:05 a. m. Parents bringing students to school must drop them off at the Gateway Elementary School door between 7:30 a. m. and 8:05 a. m.  First Student Buses will drop off students in the mornings and pick up students at dismissal on the middle school side.  Dismissal of students is at 3:02 p.m.

We engage our students with authentic and “hands on” experiences in our classrooms, science, and computer labs.  Students will also learn about the small animals and fish throughout the building, studying the animals’ natural environments and habits.  Gardening in the courtyard, Carver Garden, and greenhouse will allow students additional ways to use their communication, reading, science, and math skills as they watch plants and vegetables grown throughout the school year.

Ensuring that your child completes homework daily can make a huge difference in the level of success your child experience.  It is an extension of classroom learning activities and reinforces skills taught. Your assistance lets your child know that you care about what he/she does in school and that you are partners, with us, in his/her success!  We will focus all of our efforts on providing students with a quality education through academics, character building, and School-wide Positive Behavior Supports.

Gateway Elementary MST School is a UNIFORM SCHOOL.   Students must wear their uniforms daily.  Our uniform choices are navy or khaki pants, walking shorts, jumpers, skirts, and white or red polo shirts.  Gateway also requires students to wear belts and “tuck” their shirts in at the waist.  Shoes should cover the entire foot for maximum protection (no sandals, flip-flops, or open toe shoes).  This rule will be enforced for the safety of your child.  Students may be excluded from special activities if they are not in uniform.

Incentives and special activities are part of our daily routines such as kudos to staff and students during Morning Forums, birthday celebrations, pizza parties and trophies for reaching attendance goals, and recognition for reading and math scores are celebrated as well.  We also host school-wide celebrations during our musicals/choir performances, Winter Festivals, Haunted Halls, Black History Program, Awards Day, etc.

As we begin this year, please remember that this is our school and we need your involvement to increase communication between home and school.  Your child will receive the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team.  It is a parent’s enthusiasm, support and involvement along with the teacher’s ability to teach what they need to learn that inspires children to do their best.  Together, we can achieve wonderful things. I encourage you to join us at school activities and serve as positive role models for your children.

Thank you for choosing to send your child (ren) to Gateway Elementary.  Parent/Student Handbooks will be sent home with students and/or available for pick up during the first week of school.  The handbook will contain details about school policies and procedures.   Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at (314) 241-8255.

Remember our Back to School Festival on Saturday, August 11, 2018 10:00 a. m. until 3:00 p. m.,  at the America’s Center-Downtown STL, 701 Convention Plaza, St. Louis, MO 63101.

    Sincerely,

    Rose M. Howard
