Welcome!Mrs. Abernathy

Welcome to my fourth grade class at Mann Elementary
in St. Louis Public Schools.  This year we have departmentalized the upper grades.  I teach fourth and fifth grade science and social studies.  I believe in hands on, cooperative learning.  When you walk into my classroom you are likely to see students doing experiments, exploring our schoolyard ecosystem, completing an exploration on the iPads, or working in a team.

    My Past

I grew up in Chicago, Illinois.  My father was a teacher and I always enjoyed going to school with him and helping him for the day.  I had a number of great teachers that made learning fun and exciting.  I chose to become a teacher because I wanted to help kids learn and see how exciting learning can be.

I went to college at Saint Louis University and came to love living in St. Louis.  When I graduated from college I decided to stay in St. Louis.  I live and teach in the city because I grew up in the city of Chicago and I absolutely love being in a city.  I started teaching in 2002 at Gundlach Elementary where I taught first grade.  I moved to Mann in 2003 and have been teaching here ever since.

    My Hobbies

Outside of school I like to spend my time outdoors as much as possible. Whenever I can, I head out to the park or to explore St. Louis with my husband, my five year old daughter, and my nearly one year old son.   I spend my summers at Swift Base at S-F Scout Ranch about an hour and a half from St. Louis.  When I am at camp I  spend my free time hiking around the huge camp, sailing, water skiing, and swimming. During the school year I try to spend my time outdoors going to the park or biking. Sometimes I even bike to school!

When I can't be outside, I like to curl up with a good book.  I have several favorite authors.  I have read nearly every book by Madeline L'Engle.  She writes great books.  Some of her books are fantasy like A Wrinkle in Time but she also writes great realistic fiction based on her life.  Roald Dahl is another of my favorite authors.  He writes really funny stories.  His book Matilda is probably my all time favorite book.  I also really like books by John Grisham.  Reading his books at night is dangerous for me because I just can not put them down!
