An Update From Your SLPS Transportation Department
As we complete the first week of school, we wanted to provide you with an update on the challenges we, like so many school districts around the nation, are encountering.
The root of most of our issues is a lack of drivers. You may have seen or read news of driver shortages both nationally, and here in St. Louis. While we have managed to cover all routes to this point, it has not been without some inconvenience to students and families.
The way we are covering these routes most often is by having one bus pick up two schools. When we do this, as you might imagine, it substantially increases the amount of time it takes to transport every child. For this reason, some students are leaving and arriving later than usual. Some of our younger students, who are picked up by busses after they complete routes with older kids, may, at times, be tardy to school in the morning or arrive home late in the afternoon.
If you would like to keep better tabs on your child’s bus service, you can find First Student’s app, called FirstView, here. Please note, however, that the app may have difficulty tracking combined routes.
So how long will this last? It is largely dependent upon how quickly First Student can find and hire drivers. We believe, at this point, that the situation will gradually improve over the next several weeks, but there are, unfortunately, no guarantees. We will keep you posted on that progress.
What we request right now is your continued patience and support. The one thing we all have in common is the desire to see your children get to and from school safely, comfortably, and on time. We are doing everything in our power to deliver that result. But like so many things in this ongoing pandemic, achieving our goals is taking a little bit longer than any of us would like.
