    LITERACY GRANTS > $2.8 million in grants to region are part of federal literacy push • The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the St. Louis-based program Parents as Teachers $1.7 million as part of an effort to improve literacy skills for students in high-need schools. In addition, St. Louis Public Schools received $710,097, while the East St. Louis School District was awarded $433,448 from the program. Those sharing the $28 million awarded under the Innovative Approaches to Literacy Program include school districts with at least 25 percent of students from families below the poverty line, nonprofit organizations and various agencies.
