    Walgreens honors teen health community leaders

    Six St. Louis area teens received cash prizes up to $2,000 for their thoughts and ideas surrounding youth health at the Walgreens Expressions Challenge awards ceremony held Tuesday, January 29, at Missouri History Museum.

    The awardees also showcased their creative writing, visual art and multimedia works during the recognition. This year's Expressions Challenge sought to directly address three key needs: 1) encouraging discussion promoting teen health; 2)boosting public school resources; and 3) cultivating student creativity and leveraging new technology.

    Participants worked both individually and in groups to submit entries to express themselves on implications of low self-esteem and other teen issues.

    The winners were selected out of more than a 1,000 entries.

    Shantellius White of Carnahan High School of the Future earned First Place in Creative Writing; and Kyria Smith of McCluer High School won Second Place.

    In the Visual Arts category, Jacob Lindsey of Cleveland NJROTC Academy earned First Place and Guadalupe Gaona, representing Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club won Second Place.

    Tierra Wilson, representing Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club earned First Place in the Multimedia category and David Markivee of Fort Zumwalt West High School won second place.

    First place winners earned $2,000 each, along with $500 for their teachers and $500 for their schools. Second place winners earned $1,250 each, along with $500 for their teachers.

    Nineteenth Ward Alderwoman Marlene Davis of St. Louis was the keynote speaker, followed by brief presentations from St. Louis Public Schools, St. Louis County Health Department, St. Louis Effort for AIDS and Challenge sponsors.
