    U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan highlighted local reform efforts to turn around low-performing schools as well as the Obama Administration’s work to help more students access high-quality education during a trip to St. Louis on Monday, June 25. 
    Secretary Duncan visited two classrooms at Vashon High School, which is receiving funds under the Department’s School Improvement Grant program. Duncan met with school principal Derrick Mitchell and students participating in a summer school program to highlight the importance of graduating from high school and attaining postsecondary education. 

    Secretary Duncan participated in literature circle discussion about the book "We Beat The Street" in Amy Blackwell's classroom and watched a presentation about the book "Homeboyz" in June Berry's classroom.  Following the classroom visits, Duncan visited after-school programs promoting physical fitness and shot a few baskets with some of the students athletes and Principal Mitchell.
