ST. LOUIS, MO. January 10, 2012 – The St. Louis Public School District’s Department of Career and Technical Education, Office of Adult Technical Education, is now accepting applications for its Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) Training Course. Classes begin Tuesday, January 17, and pre-registration is required.
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certifies emergency medical service providers at four levels: First Responder; Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced EMT and Paramedic. (NOTE: New guidelines as of Jan 2012)
At Gateway Institute of Technology, students enrolled in the NREMT program will receive the Emergency Medical Technician -Basic (EMT-B) course, which represents the first level of the emergency medical system. An EMT trained at this level is prepared to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting patients by ambulance to the hospital. The EMT-Basic also has the skills to assess a patient's condition and manage respiratory, cardiac, trauma emergencies, medical emergencies, pediatric and obstetric emergencies.
Gateway’s Emergency Medical Technician -Basic (EMT-B) program is certified as a training entity with the Missouri Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) and as a Training Center with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute (ECSI). Gateway's Emergency Medical Technician -Basic (EMT-B) course also provides training in First Aid and CPR.
Classes will be held primarily two evenings a week (Tuesday & Thursday) for 20 weeks at Gateway Institute of Technology, 5101 McRee. Students will be expected to attend from 4:00pm until 8:00pm, covering the 150 classroom hours. Clinical hours are included based upon space availability. The course will end on May 24th with a commencement ceremony.
To be eligible for the EMT Training Program, students must be:
· At least eighteen (18) years of age;
· Possess a valid driver’s license;
· Intermediate proficiency in English or higher is recommended;
· Pass a background check & health screenings.
Tuition and Fees
A $50.00 non-refundable registration fee is due when registering at the St. Louis Board of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education, 801 N. 11th Street, St. Louis, MO 63101. The full tuition payment of $820.00 is due by the first day of class on Tuesday, January 17. Financial aid is available for students, ages 18-21, who meet eligibility criteria. Payments in the form of certified checks or money orders should be made payable to the St. Louis Public Schools. The practical test fee of $70.00 is due three (3) weeks before the practical exam is taken. The written test fee of $70.00 is due when registering for the exam. Additional costs that may be incurred during the course of the training includes, but is not limited to: uniform, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, criminal background check and/or drug screening, health exam, immunizations and classroom supplies.
