Clergy Rally to Help Homeless Students
Representatives from dozens of area churches donated winter clothing for homeless students enrolled in St. Louis Public Schools at the District’s final clergy breakfast of the year on December 5. The monthly breakfasts allow Superintendent Kelvin R. Adams and other District staff to update the faith-based community on SLPS initiatives and activities.
Seventy-two new or gently used winter coats, along with 100 hat-glove-and-scarf sets, were collected at the breakfast by the SLPS Students-in-Transition (SIT) Office, which provides support to homeless and foster care students. Several pastors also made monetary donations.
The keynote speaker for the breakfast was SLPS Homeless Coordinator and Foster Care Liaison Deidra C. Thomas-Murray, MSW, LMSW, who runs the SIT office. SIT’s mission is to efficiently and effectively identify homeless students and provide support for academic success (tutoring, free meals, uniforms/clothing, counseling, transportation, mentoring, coats, school and hygienic supplies).
